After a General Chapter, it is usually convenient to write a letter exhorting the brothers to receive and welcome the documents, proposals and options of the Chapter. I will do so in a next opportunity, no doubt. But on this occasion, I think it is better to write a letter about what we capitulars have received, as Piarists, throughout the three weeks of work we lived in Mexico.

You may be surprised by what I say, but I think all the capitulars will agree on this statement: we have received, in Mexico, many testimonies of Piarist life and mission. They are worth remembering, highlighting and sharing. They are testimonies that have inspired the future of the Chapter. The background against which we discern illuminates the chapter process, without a doubt. I share them with all of you, with a grateful heart and from the conviction that I will not be able to quote them all, because there have been so many.

ENCOUNTERING WITH THE HOMES. The Calasanz Homes are one of the most significant Piarist works in Mexico. Chinchachoma’s inspiration is very present in this extraordinary incarnation of the charism of Calasanz, which is increasingly expanded in the whole of the Pious Schools. The capitulars wanted to make a gift to the Homes of Mexico: the delivery of a little money that could help in some needs of the Homes, such as, for example, an aid for the purchase of the van or other things that they need.

The gift was given in the context of a Eucharist celebrated in Puebla. But the Home Houses gave the capitulars something much more valuable: the testimony of a life transformed by the integral and Piarist education received in the Home. This testimony has many names of its own, but I want to express it with one: Salvador, a 15-year-old who shared with all of us his life process. It was extraordinary. A reconstructed life, in which this young man was able to reconnect with his dreams, aspirations, desires to grow. A transformed life, not without effort: struggle, work, trust, accompaniment, transparency, sincere search for one’s own self. And a fruitful encounter with Jesus, the Lord.

It was a profoundly Piarist testimony. The image of Salvador, moved, embracing Fr. Cristian and his educator, is indelible. He wasn’t the only one crying, he wasn’t the only one who felt like giving a hug. The capitulars receive, from the Homes, a new confirmation of Calasanz’ intuition: if a young man meets an educator who helps him grow, from a project like the Piarist, that young man will grow and become a man of good, capable of a life seeking fulfillment. Thank you, Salvador!

LIVES TRANSFORMED BY CALASANZ. Especially significant, Salvador’s testimony was not the only one we received. There were many more. In the visits to the various Piarist presences of Mexico we were able to listen to educators, students, alumni, young religious, responsible for our works, Piarist priests. And, listening to them, it was not difficult to find the common denominator of all experiences: the transformative encounter with Calasanz.

Throughout these years, I have had the formidable opportunity to listen to many of these testimonies, which reflect with sincere authenticity the value of the treasure we carry in our poor hands: the charism of Calasanz, a gift of the Holy Spirit capable of giving new life, new horizons and new options.

But what we have lived in Mexico reminds us that the lives transformed by Jesus and Calasanz always ask for something more from us. The process cannot be stopped, nor does it ever come to an end. It is a permanent process, which always asks for new answers from those who believe in it, because novelty is embodied in each person, and each one wants to continue building to grow the talent received, without burying it[1]. The best testimony was given to us by a young man from the Morelos Institute, whose way of thanking the Piarists for the gift received was to demand more and better answers from us. I transcribe his final words, because I asked them personally: “I would love for the Piarists to be able to reach the students much more to share the Piarist charism, and that this contributes to each one being able to heal their wounds and fight their battles, as I did. I ask you to be close, to plan new strategies, to innovate, to take advantage of the technological resources that we now have at hand to make the Calasanctian spirit modern, to be inclusive, to be constant and resilient in each of your projects, to live intensely, to love your students. Once again, I ask you: be close, innovate and love.” No young person speaks without challenging us. I remember the name of this young man: Luis. Thank you, Luis!

A WELCOME THAT INCREASES COMMUNION.  Throughout the Chapter, we visited the presences of Puebla, Apizaco and Chiautempan-Ocotlán. I will not detail what we did, but what we received: a fraternal, organized, participatory welcome; a joyful presence of the community, of the Fraternity, of the educators, of the students; authentic testimonies of Piarist life; an overflowing joy for the presence of the capitulars in each of the schools. All this provoked significant reactions from the capitulars, each according to his perspective: the Piarist of a new presence, who said “now I understand what the real Calasanctian identity means”; the young Piarist who expressed “the things that young people have said are new, for example, the request to innovate“; the Piarist who wanted to take advantage of every minute to talk with the boys; the formator who said “how much it helps a young man to share his process and feel that they understand him“, etc. Dear brothers and sisters of Mexico, nothing you did was left without echo in the soul of the capitulars, including the carpet of flowers of Morelos. 

A NEW PHOTOGRAPH OF THE PIOUS SCHOOLS. We have seen many photographs of the chapter house. The official photos of the Chapter circulate on the networks. If we look closely, we will see that it is a “new” photo. The capitulars are not alone. The Council of the General Fraternity is present, and a good group of young people, religious and laity, members of the pastoral and educational processes of the Pious Schools, is present. All of them cast their votes to prioritize the Action Lines of the Keys to Life. All of them signed the minutes of the Chapter. Their presence and participation was truly meaningful and valuable.  We are entering a new way of understanding and realizing our chapter processes and our dynamics of shared reflection. The canonical spheres reserved for religious are clear, but the increasingly rich spaces of shared discernment with the people who build the Pious Schools day by day are also becoming clear. It will be necessary to advance in the reflection of how to articulate and organize in a more real and representative way this immense flow of Piarist life.

A PRESENT AND PURPOSEFUL FRATERNITY. I emphasize the presence of the Council of the General Fraternity. It was very positive and pluralistic. But there are quite a few things left that we will have to think about. Among them, I quote the following: the participation of the Fraternity in the processes of preparation of the Chapter, in all those areas that concern them and on which it is good that suggestions and proposals arrive, the articulated presence of representatives of the various Piarist Fraternities; a greater dedication of time to reflection on the construction of the new Piarist subject, a theme that perhaps we should raise recurrently in the General Chapters, which are a very good opportunity to take the pulse of the path we are traveling; a deeper reflection on Piarist vocational plurality and on Piarist ministries, etc. And without forgetting so many people who, without belonging to the Fraternity, build Pious Schools in so many places in our world.

YOUNG PEOPLE, PRESENCE AND CHALLENGE. The General Congregation summoned a group of young people to the Chapter, in coherence with what was experienced throughout the process of the Piarist Synod of Youth and considering that it was a good opportunity to give a renewed impetus to the Calasanz Movement. The presence of the young people did not disappoint; on the contrary, it helped the Chapter to delve deeply into the theme of the Order’s relationship with young people, a relationship of increasing co-responsibility.  The Chapter had access to the proposals of the young people, elaborated along the synodal path. Perhaps the challenge we have to consider now is to follow up on this whole process, so that what has been a good experience is transformed into a new way of proceeding. The challenge is exciting.

THE FORMANDEE OF MEXICO. Throughout the Chapter there were two moments of coexistence with all the young people who live their initial formation process in Mexico (pre-novices, novices and juniors). There are many things we could highlight from these encounters, but I’m sticking with two. First of all, it was nice to see the capitulars looking for the meeting with the young people (on the walk, at lunch, on the bus, at any time). There was a desire to meet them, to listen to them, to encourage them, perhaps to receive from them the strength and the new vigor of their vocation. But I want to underline the great good that these meetings did in young people. I had the opportunity to meet with the juniors and hear their testimony of joy at the vocational impulse they had received. Once again, we could all see the value of shared life and fraternal encounter. 

A CONTEXT THAT INSPIRES DISCERNMENT. No Chapter meets “in the abstract.” We meet in specific places, with their own history and their particular dynamism. And these “keys of context” not only inspire the work in the chapter house, but also help in the subsequent process  of welcoming the Chapter. This 48th General Chapter will go down in history as the “Mexico Chapter”, although it will also be known as the chapter held in times of pandemic. Despite the health difficulties and complications of travel, the Chapter could be held with the participation of all the capitulars. We must be very grateful that this has been possible, and renew our conviction that external difficulties, which should not be ignored, cannot impede the permanent process of building the Pious Schools. 

THANKS. There are many people to thank for the success of the Chapter. But I want six specific names to be publicly recorded: Adriana, Alan, Saúl, Paco, Emmanuel and José Luis. They were part of the Logistics Commission organizing the Chapter. Their work, their dedication and their discretion were, quite simply, extraordinary. The Chapter gave them a trip to Rome, more than deserved, in which they can grow even more in their love for Calasanz. Thank you!

UNDER YOUR PROTECTION.  Shortly before the end of the Chapter, we were all able to make a pilgrimage to the Basilica of Guadalupe, to offer Our Lady the chapter works and to put under her protection the walk of the Pious Schools. To Our Lady of Guadalupe, who is venerated with deep love for the Mexican people and for so many peoples of America, we entrust the fruits of our General Chapter.

Un Capítulo que acoge y recibe

Después de un Capítulo General suele ser conveniente escribir una carta exhortando a los hermanos a recibir y acoger los documentos, propuestas y opciones del Capítulo. Lo haré en una próxima oportunidad, sin duda. Pero en esta ocasión creo que es mejor escribir una carta sobre lo que los capitulares hemos recibido, como escolapios, a lo largo de las tres semanas de trabajo que vivimos en México.

Tal vez os sorprenda esto que digo, pero creo que todos los capitulares estarán de acuerdo en esta afirmación: hemos recibido, en México, muchos testimonios de vida y misión escolapias. Vale la pena recordarlos, destacarlos y compartirlos.  Y son testimonios que han inspirado el devenir del Capítulo. El contexto desde el que discernimos ilumina el proceso capitular, sin duda alguna. Los comparto con todos vosotros, con un corazón agradecido y desde la convicción de que no podré citarlos todos, porque han sido muchos.

EL ENCUENTRO CON LOS HOGARES. Los Hogares Calasanz son una de las obras escolapias más significativas de México. La inspiración del Chinchachoma está muy presente en esta extraordinaria encarnación del carisma de Calasanz, que está crecientemente expandida en el conjunto de las Escuelas Pías. Los capitulares quisieron hacer un regalo a los Hogares de México: la entrega de un dinerillo que pudiera ayudar en algunas necesidades de las Casas Hogar como, por ejemplo, una ayuda para la compra de la furgoneta u otras cosas que se necesiten.

El regalo se entregó en el contexto de una Eucaristía celebrada en Puebla. Pero las Casas Hogar regalaron a los capitulares algo mucho más valioso: el testimonio de una vida transformada por la educación integral y escolapia recibida en el Hogar. Este testimonio tiene muchos nombres propios, pero quiero expresarlo con uno: Salvador, un joven de 15 años que compartió con todos nosotros su proceso vital. Fue algo extraordinario. Una vida reconstruida, en la que este joven pudo reconectar con sus sueños, aspiraciones, deseos de crecer. Una vida transformada, no sin esfuerzo: lucha, trabajo, confianza, acompañamiento, transparencia, sincera búsqueda del propio yo. Y un encuentro fecundo con Jesús, el Señor.

Fue un testimonio profundamente escolapio. La imagen de Salvador, emocionado, abrazado al P. Cristian y a su educadora, es imborrable. No era el único que lloraba, ni era el único que sentía ganas de dar un abrazo. Los capitulares recibimos, desde las Casas Hogar, una nueva confirmación de la intuición de Calasanz: si un joven se encuentra con un educador que le ayuda a crecer, desde un proyecto como el escolapio, ese joven crecerá y se convertirá en un hombre de bien, capaz de una vida buscadora de plenitud. ¡Gracias, Salvador!

VIDAS TRANSFORMADAS POR CALASANZ. Siendo especialmente significativo, el testimonio de Salvador no fue el único que recibimos. Hubo muchos más. En las visitas a las diversas presencias escolapias de México pudimos escuchar a educadores, alumnos, exalumnos, religiosos jóvenes, responsables de nuestras obras, sacerdotes escolapios. Y, al escucharlos, no era complicado encontrar el denominador común de todas las experiencias: el encuentro transformador con Calasanz.

A lo largo de estos años he tenido la formidable oportunidad de escuchar muchos de estos testimonios, que reflejan con sincera autenticidad el valor del tesoro que llevamos en nuestras pobres manos: el carisma de Calasanz, un don del Espíritu Santo capaz de dar nueva vida, nuevos horizontes y nuevas opciones.

Pero lo que vivimos en México nos recuerda que las vidas transformadas por Jesús y Calasanz piden siempre algo más de nosotros. El proceso no se puede parar, ni llega nunca a su fin. Es un proceso permanente, que siempre pide respuestas nuevas a quienes creemos en él, porque la novedad se encarna en cada persona, y cada uno quiere seguir construyendo para hacer crecer el talento recibido, sin enterrarlo[1]. El mejor testimonio nos lo dio un joven del Instituto Morelos, cuya forma de agradecer a los escolapios el regalo recibido fue exigirnos más y mejores respuestas. Transcribo sus palabras finales, porque se las pedí personalmente: “Me encantaría que los escolapios pudieran llegar muchísimo más a los estudiantes para compartir el carisma escolapio, y que eso contribuya a que cada uno pueda sanar sus heridas y librar sus batallas, como yo lo hice. Les pido que sean cercanos, que planifiquen nuevas estrategias, que innoven, que aprovechen los recursos tecnológicos que ahora tenemos a la mano para hacer moderno el espíritu calasancio, que sean incluyentes, que sean constantes y resilientes en cada uno de sus proyectos, que vivan intensamente, que amen a sus alumnos. Una vez más, les pido: sean cercanos, innoven y amen”. ¿No decimos que queremos escuchar a los jóvenes? Ningún joven habla sin desafiarnos. Recuerdo el nombre de este joven: Luis. ¡Gracias, Luis!

UNA ACOGIDA QUE ACRECIENTA LA COMUNIÓN. A lo largo del Capítulo, visitamos las presencias de Puebla, Apizaco y Chiautempan-Ocotlán. No voy a explicar lo que hicimos, sino lo que recibimos: una acogida fraterna, organizada, participada; una presencia gozosa de la comunidad, de la Fraternidad, de los educadores, de los alumnos y alumnas; unos testimonios auténticos de vida escolapia; una alegría desbordante por la presencia de los capitulares en cada uno de los colegios. Todo ello provocó reacciones significativas de los capitulares, cada uno según su perspectiva: el escolapio de una nueva presencia, que decía “ahora comprendo lo que significa la identidad calasancia real”; el escolapio joven que expresaba “las cosas que han dicho los jóvenes son nuevas, por ejemplo, la petición de innovar”; el escolapio que querían aprovechar cada minuto para conversar con los muchachos; el formador que decía ”cuánto ayuda a un joven compartir su proceso y sentir que le comprenden”, etc. Queridos hermanos y hermanas de México, nada de lo que hicisteis quedó sin eco en el alma de los capitulares, incluida la alfombra de flores del Morelos. 

UNA NUEVA FOTOGRAFÍA DE LAS ESCUELAS PÍAS. Hemos visto muchas fotografías del aula capitular. Circulan por las redes las fotos oficiales del Capítulo. Si nos fijamos bien, veremos que se trata de una foto “nueva”. No están solos los capitulares. Está presente el Consejo de la Fraternidad General, y está presente un buen grupo de jóvenes, religiosos y laicos, miembros de los procesos pastorales y educativos de las Escuelas Pías. Todos ellos emitieron sus votos para priorizar las Líneas de Acción de las Claves de Vida. Todos ellos firmaron las actas del Capítulo. Su presencia y participación fue realmente significativa y valiosa.  Estamos entrando en un nuevo modo de comprender y realizar nuestros procesos capitulares y nuestras dinámicas de reflexión compartida. Quedan claros los ámbitos canónicos y reservados a los religiosos, pero van quedando también claros los cada vez más ricos espacios de discernimiento compartido con las personas que construyen día a día Escuelas Pías. Habrá que avanzar en la reflexión de cómo articular y organizar de modo más real y representativo este inmenso caudal de vida escolapia.

UNA FRATERNIDAD PRESENTE Y PROPOSITIVA. Destaco la presencia del Consejo de la Fraternidad General. Fue muy positiva y plural. Pero quedan bastantes cosas pendientes que deberemos ir pensando. Entre ellas, cito las siguientes: la participación de la Fraternidad en los procesos de preparación del Capítulo, en todas aquellas áreas que les competen y sobre las que es bueno que lleguen sugerencias y propuestas, la presencia articulada de representantes de las diversas Fraternidades Escolapias; una mayor dedicación de tiempo a la reflexión sobre la construcción del nuevo sujeto escolapio, tema que quizá nos debamos plantear de modo recurrente en los Capítulos Generales, que son una muy buena oportunidad para tomar el pulso al camino que estamos recorriendo; una más profunda reflexión sobre la pluralidad vocacional escolapia y sobre los ministerios escolapios, etc. Y sin olvidarnos de tantas personas que, sin pertenecer a la Fraternidad, construyen Escuelas Pías en tantos lugares de nuestro mundo.

LOS JÓVENES, PRESENCIA Y DESAFÍO. La Congregación General convocó al Capítulo a un grupo de jóvenes, en coherencia con lo vivido a lo largo del proceso del Sínodo Escolapio de los Jóvenes y considerando que era una buena oportunidad para dar un renovado impulso al Movimiento Calasanz. La presencia de los jóvenes no decepcionó; todo lo contrario, ayudó a que el Capítulo entrase a fondo en el tema de la relación de la Orden con los jóvenes, una relación de creciente corresponsabilidad. El Capítulo tuvo acceso a las propuestas de los jóvenes, elaboradas a lo largo del camino sinodal. Tal vez el reto que nos tenemos que plantear ahora es el seguimiento de todo este proceso, para que lo que ha sido una buena experiencia se transforme en un nuevo modo de proceder. El reto es apasionante.  

LOS FORMANDOS DE MÉXICO. A lo largo del Capítulo hubo dos momentos de convivencia con todos los jóvenes que viven su proceso de Formación Inicial en México (prenovicios, novicios y juniores). Hay muchas cosas que podríamos destacar de estos encuentros, pero me quedo con dos. En primer lugar, era bonito ver a lo capitulares buscar el encuentro con los jóvenes (en el paseo, en la comida, en el autobús, en cualquier momento). Había deseo de conocerlos, de escucharlos, de animarlos, tal vez de recibir de ellos la fuerza y el vigor novedoso de su vocación. Pero yo quiero subrayar el gran bien que estos encuentros hicieron en los jóvenes. Tuve la oportunidad de reunirme con los juniores y escuchar su testimonio de alegría por el impulso vocacional que habían recibido. Una vez más, todos pudimos comprobar el valor de la vida compartida y del encuentro fraterno. 

UN CONTEXTO QUE INSPIRA EL DISCERNIMIENTO. Ningún Capítulo se reúne “en abstracto”. Nos reunimos en lugares concretos, con su propia historia y su dinamismo particular. Y esas “claves de contexto” no sólo inspiran los trabajos en el aula capitular, sino que ayudan en el proceso posterior de acogida del Capítulo. Este 48º Capítulo General pasará a la historia como el “Capítulo de México”, aunque también será conocido como el capítulo celebrado en tiempos de pandemia. A pesar de las dificultades de salud y las complicaciones de los viajes, el Capítulo se pudo celebrar con la participación de todos los capitulares. Debemos estar muy agradecidos porque esto haya sido posible, y renovar nuestra convicción de que las dificultades externas, que no deben ser ignoradas, no pueden impedir el proceso permanente de construcción de Escuelas Pías. 

AGRADECIMIENTOS. Hay muchas personas a las que hay que agradecer el éxito del Capítulo. Pero yo quiero que quede constancia pública de seis nombres concretos: Adriana, Alan, Saúl, Paco, Emmanuel y José Luis. Ellos formaron parte de la Comisión Logística organizadora del Capítulo. Su trabajo, su dedicación y su discreción fueron, sencillamente, extraordinarios. El Capítulo les regaló un viaje a Roma, más que merecido, en el que podrán crecer aún más en su amor por Calasanz. ¡Gracias!

A TU AMPARO Y PROTECCIÓN. Poco antes de terminar el Capítulo, todos pudimos peregrinar a la Basílica de Guadalupe, para ofrecer a la Virgen los trabajos capitulares y poner bajo su amparo el caminar de las Escuelas Pías. A Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, que es venerada con profundo amor por el pueblo mexicano y por tantos pueblos de América, le encomendamos los frutos de nuestro Capítulo General.
