Today, Father Rafael Capó, a Piarist of the Province of the United States and Puerto Rico, was elected the new Director of SEPI (Southeast Pastoral Institute) by the board of directors, in the presence
of Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Miami and Bishop Gerard Barbarito of Palm Beach.

SEPI is an Institute fully dedicated to the formation of Hispanic leaders in the context of the USA.  Its founder is Fr. Mario Vizcaino, a Piarist Father from Cuba whose zeal and enthusiasm for the
evangelization of the Hispanic population, under the light of the Vatican II Council, and with the conception of the Church as People of God, brought him to develop creatively and efficiently, ways to form consistent leadership in the vast area of the South East region of the USA.  The region embraces thirty dioceses in nine different states. After the creation of this Institution in 1978 we do not exaggerate if we dare to say that the Church would not be what it is today without SEPI, at least in this part of USA.  This has been well recognized by Archbishop Wensky in words and sentiments he expressed to Fr. Mario today.

Now Fr. Rafael Capó has accepted this challenging responsibility with great heart. His theological and pedagogical preparation, as well as his previous responsibilities in the fields of direction, administration, teaching, vocational ministry and leadership, are the best guarantee to already foresee a future of hope for the SEPI, which is officially directed and administered by the Piarist Order. The spirit of the Institute is totally in line with our Calasanzian ministry, for its general objective consists on educating and serving the Church by training and developing the Hispanic leadership while strengthening family life and promoting the dignity and the talents of the individual.

On the premises of SEPI, in Miami there is a community of Piarist Fathers, who actively collaborate in all the pastoral activities of the Institution. They also form and guide a group of young people before they enter the novitiate. Already two former members of this group have been ordained as Piarist priests: Frs. Nelson Henao and José J. Vanegas; and many others pursue their theological and religious formation in Puerto Rico, Mexico and Colombia.

May the spirit of our Founder help us guide the boat of our Province of USA and PR on waters of faithful creativity at the service of children, young people and families. We are already convinced that the big name SEPI has given to the Church and to the Pious Schools will be the utmost vocational appeal, for many youths to follow Christ on the footprints of St. Joseph Calasanz.
